  Exposure

George MacDonald is probably Huntly’s most famous son and enjoyed great popluar success as an author of fantasy novels in the 1860s and 70s, however he is almost unkown these days. Like many people, George evenutally left Huntly to make his life and work.  Exposure celebrated the legacy of George and his work, while also trying to reconnect family members who have moved out of the area. People came from all parts of the UK and abroad to take part in what could possibly be the largest family/school photograph ever. Others, unable to come back from faraway places like Canada, South Africa and New Zealand were represented by a George MacDonald dummy head. A project with Nuno Sacramento. Publication.

  Mono

When Jelka first came to Huntly, she was intrigued by the phenomenon of young people driving around in defined rhythms in a continual, almost performative manner. She assumed a link between youth boredom and the monotony of driving around in repeated circles. During her three-months stay she took a deeper look at the cruising culture in the town, to discover what fascinates the drivers, what are their motivations and passions.

  Empty Shop

Eva Merz was invited to come to Huntly to provide a reaction to the increasing number of empty shops in the rural town.  The project focused on a grocer’s shop from the 1920s which had been empty since the mid-eighties. Eva Merz preserved the shop by declaring it a Modern Monument. This was expressed through a performance on the 29th April 03 when the artist climbed up to the roof of the shop, swinging a flag with the words EMPTY SHOP. The artist then produced a series of limited edition souvenirs of the empty shop, like mugs, lighters, mouse-mats and t-shirts. Publication.
